Cougars dominate Miramont Invitational

2014 UH men's golf Miramont

BRYAN – What a tournament for the University of Houston men’s golf team.

The Cougars won the Miramont Invitational here Monday and Tuesday by an astonishing 16 strokes and had four players place in the top 10 to earn their first team title of the season.

“It was a pretty solid performance for us from top to bottom,” Director of Golf Jonathan Dismuke said. “Any time you can put six players among the top-20 leaders, it’s been a successful week.”

It all started with senior All-American Roman Robledo.

Roman Robledo: Houston-area amateurs advance to U.S. Amateur quarterfinals

Robledo fired a 5-under 67 in the second round, tied for the low score of the tournament, to surge to a second-place finish [72-67—139]. It’s another strong showing for Robledo, who advanced to the quarterfinals at the U.S. Amateur this summer in Atlanta.

“Roman had a long summer, so now he has had a little more rest and is fresh,” Dismuke said. “Golf doesn’t take a toll on you so much, but it can wear you mentally at times, and that makes it difficult to compete. He had a chance to recover and was relaxed and regained his focus for this tournament.”

Robledo’s round included six birdies and a bogey.

He finished one stroke back from Louis Kelly of Louisiana, who shot a 6-under 138 [69-69].

The tournament was originally scheduled for 54 holes to be played Monday and Tuesday but severe weather Monday cancelled the afternoon round.

The Sam Houston State men’s golf team finished in a four-way tie for fourth, led by senior Zach Cabra, who tied for fifth with a 3-under 141.

The Rice Owls surged to a fourth-place finish after moving up six places Tuesday.

Senior Joe Beck III fired a career-low with a 69 on Tuesday to earn his first top-20 finish of the season. Beck shot 2 over for the tournament.

Tommy Economou turned in a top-20 finish of his own after shooting a pair of 73s to finish 2 over.

The Houston Baptist men’s golf team moved into the top 10 Tuesday by cutting nine strokes off its opening-round score. Senior Preston Stanley helped lead that charge with a 3-under 69, as he finished in a tie for eighth.

Woods ‘pleased’ with progress of Bluejack National

MONTGOMERY – Tiger Woods was back in Texas last week to check on the progress of his latest course, Bluejack National.

The 7,400-yard course nestled in the pines of FM 1488 in Montgomery is currently under construction, and Woods was pleased with its progress. Since construction began in August, 15 holes have been cleared and the rough is beginning to take shape on the front 9 and on the short course, The Playgrounds.

The course is scheduled to open in fall 2015.

Bluejack is a special place,” Woods said. “The movement of the land through the magnificent forest is a terrific foundation for the course. I’m very pleased with where we are right now, and looking forward to the finished product.

“We’ve cleared the underbrush surrounding the holes—the forest floor is mulch and pine straw. The wide landing areas and open green fronts will deliver a great golf experience for players at any skill level.”

When golf goes bad: this guy loses it after a bad round

We’ve all had terrible rounds. And in the heat of the moment, sometimes it feels as if breaking every club in your bag would make things right again [hint: never a good idea]. This guy takes that idea to a whole new level.

This is the exact moment when golf goes bad. As if snapping more than $1,000 worth of clubs isn’t bad enough, the guy takes his anger out on his golf bag, too!

Jesus Christ. Somebody get this asshole a beer.

Better yet, take him somewhere to get his head checked.

And add him to the list of players with whom we won’t be playing.
